GREECE SCUBA DIVING CHARTERS
Our Greece website, GreeceBoat.com, has descriptions of all boats offering scuba diving charters in Greece.
Until recently, recreational scuba diving was restricted in Greece in order to deter antiquities smugglers - scuba diving was open to only a few individuals who were granted special permission by the authorities striving to protect the many underwater treasures and wrecks of archaeological importance. In 2004 authorities lifted these restrictions and scuba diving in Greece is no longer prohibited and one can dive almost anywhere.
Greece is quickly becoming a popular scuba diving destination. With over 4,000 islands and 12,000 miles of coastland, the Greek Seas offer perfect conditions for scuba diving charters.
The rich aquatic life with numerous species of fish and marine life, the amazing scenery of caverns, canyons, walls and reefs with a visibility of 30 to 40 meters nearly year around make Greece a popular destination for scuba diving charters. These waters are also home to many ancient and modern shipwrecks, with thousands of wrecks still undiscovered.
The seabed of Greece is among the richest in ship wrecks dating as far back as the 5th century B.C. - there have been estimated over 1,000 shipwrecks along the waters of Greece's coastline, making it an exciting destination for adventurous scuba divers.
Even though scuba diving is widely popular and not under rigid restrictions any more, there are still some regulations in place:
- Underwater activities with breathing apparatuses are allowed from dawn to sunset
- The use of special equipment for the search and localization of antiquities as well as the existence of such equipment on the boats (yachts, sailing boats etc.) is strictly forbidden
- The lifting or removal or photographing of antiquities is forbidden. Any discovery of antiquities should be immediately reported to the local Archaeological Service or Port Authority or Police Authority.
- The underwater fishing with breathing apparatuses is forbidden
